Rural forest (Alaska/Yukon/PNW) 00-2010s (falls into whimsical version of universe)
The kids (siblings 11-16) girl and boy Kita and Hai are visiting their family's village; they're drawn into their adventure by rumors of an abandoned treehouse, cabin, or plane that's difficult to access. This lure appeals to them because they want the excitement and challenge after a summer of being called city kids and want to prove themselves) Or while they're out forging the smell of smoked fish a cultural delicacy for me but in the off season is very strange or sweet jams and syrups)
They encounter an old man who promises to help them get there, either the house is a portal or they fall into one on their way as a result of the old mans "help" and it's more a fantasy or folklore version of their world
I would like the old man to have the archetype of beasts that transform into man which are common in my cultures folktales they trick, lure and devour or teach ( or they try to do all of the above) and I'd love for the old man to adopt this in his villain arc at the end the kids see who he is a beast I haven't decided from my culture he's in his 70s-80s face (secretly ancient) he will not hurt them in the end but will teach them a lesson in their culture and a quality to life they will carry with them forever
