Story
When looking up Hansel and Gretel there were three things that really stood out to me, the message that "when famine comes, the people who are meant to care for you will fail you", the clear underlying messaging about how women were treated around the time this story was written, and the interesting detail of the mother mysteriously dying once the witch dies.
I blended these elements.
My story is about a boy-mom who can't let go of her son, he wants to move out but she protests against the idea until eventually settling on him moving in with a "family friend". The husband agrees on this idea with the compromise that the sister must go too. The family friend is just her dressed in a disguise, she constantly puts the younger sister to work while babying the son. She decides to slowly poison the son deciding if she can't have him no one can. The sister figures it out but can't figure out why but the son won't listen thinking his sister is just trying to scare him out of growing up like his mom.
Eventually the daughter catches the mom dressing up as the "family friend" and pours the poison into the mom's makeup.
Once she's dead, the brother starts to slowly feel better, confused why the family friend never came back they both return back home to discover their mom has died mysterously. No one but the sister none-the-wiser.
